The Four Sublime States (Brahmavihara) symbolized by the Four Ears(สี่หู) of Sihu Hata
Panca-Silani Samadiyami
Undertaking the Five Precepts, symbolized by the Five Eyes(ห้าตา) of Sihu Hata
01Literal Translation (EN)
Preserved by Kruba Chaiya Wongsa Phatthana(Kruba Wong, BE 2456–2543) from the ancient Lanna palm-leaf manuscript of Wat Phra Phutthabat Doi Khao Kwai (Chiang Rai).
As Kruba Wong explicitly taught in his monastic commentary, the Lanna mythical creature Maeng Sihu Hata(a manifestation of Sakka/Indra with 4 ears and 5 eyes that consumes glowing charcoal and transmutes it into gold) is a pedagogical Buddhist allegory: the Four Ears represent listening with the Four Brahmaviharas (Metta, Karuna, Mudita, Upekkha), the Five Eyes represent guarding the Five Precepts (Panca-Sila), and eating burning charcoal represents patience (Khanti) transmuting hardship into spiritual merit.
