Traditional Siamese Wai Khru opening formula ('May auspicious accomplishment arise')
Phra Prakhonthap · Phra Phirap
The twin dramatic preceptors: Gandharva (celestial music) and Bhairava (sacred dance and protective authority)
01Literal Translation (EN)
Venerates Phra Phirap, the highest and most sacred preceptor mask (Borom Khru) in the Siamese Royal Khon (masked drama) and classical music tradition, paired with Phra Prakhonthap (the celestial Gandharva musician).
As documented by Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong and Dhanit Yupho (former Director-General of the Fine Arts Department), Phra Phirap represents the Siamese localization of Sanskrit Bhairava(the wrathful protector form of Shiva) merged with Viradhaka of the Ramakien.
The mask's purple-obsidian complexion and round golden eyes symbolize sovereign authority (Maha Amnaj) and the warding off of pestilence.
